Chacun de son côté, le Manchot et le Colonel exercent la même profession : chasseur de primes. Le Manchot n'a guère que cette solution pour tirer profit de son extraordinaire adresse au tir et de son cynisme à toute épreuve, alors que le Colonel, authentique ancien officier supérieur, aime la chasse à l'homme pour le plaisir qu'elle lui procure. Fréquemment rivaux, les deux hommes sont confrontés à un problème plus complexe qu'à l'accoutumée.
