Dans le 5e arrondissement de Paris, en août 1964. Maréchal, un célibataire débonnaire, s'apprête à prendre la route pour l'Italie lorsque sa 2 CV est emboutie par la Rolls Royce de Léopold Saroyan, un homme d'affaires pressé. Pour le dédommager, Saroyan propose à Maréchal de convoyer une Cadillac de Naples à Bordeaux. Tout heureux de se voir offrir un voyage de rêve, le "Corniaud" accepte.
